- 8. - -Designation of Apparent Cause of Occurrence:

Desi~n Procedure g

bhndfacture Unusual Service Condition

_ Installation /

X Construction-Component Failure Operator Other ;(specify) 9.

Analysis of Occurrence:

Two instrument line samples each containing a weld which showed liquid penetrant: indications were subjected to metallurgical examination.

Photographs of the samplesL are attached -(Figures 1 and 2). -Both samples Jwere~ sectioned to explore the cause of the examinations. Visual exam-ination of longitudinal sections prepared from the samples disclosed crsvices-open to the external surface at the locations of the liquid penetrant indications. An over-all view of the longitudinal section

- s

.from PDT-1039 is provided_in the attached Figure 3.

The crevices of m

both samples are in the same relative position, that is, at the center of the weld face.

2 Examination at a higher magnification of the surface crevices (as shown

.in Figure 4). indicate that they are interdendritic shrinkage imperfec-tions. These are limited in_depty to 0.009 and 0.034 inch for sample PDT-1037 and PDT-1039 respectively.
