Arkansas Nuclear One-Unit 1 Docket No. 50-313 Narrow Range Reactor Coolant Pressure Transmitters

Dear Mr. Knuth:

On February 27, 1974, we reported a possible significant deficiency con-corning the narrow range reactor coolant pressure transmitters to m

Mr. M. S. Kidd, Reactor Inspector, Region II.

D)

The problem with the pressure transmitters was that their response time did not conform to the performance specifications. An investigation of the safety analysis calculations involving a pressure trip was performed by Babcock 6 Wilcox and it was determined that the increase in sensor delay time would cause a violation of a safety limit in conjunction with the startup accident. A study of the startup accident showed that the increased sensor delay time would cause the high pressure safety limit of 2750 psia to be exceeded in the event that two or more banks of con-trol rods were moved simultaneously out of the core.

As corrective action we have replaced the deficient transmitters with

+

transmitters that meet the required performance specifications.

Very truly yours, J. D. Phillips Senior Vice President cc:
