IDENTIFICATION OF OCCURRENCE: Makeup Pump 1-2 was declared inoperable on July 5,1977 and Makeup Pump 1-1 was declared inoperable on July 9,1977.

Conditions Prior to Occurrence: The station was in Mode 4 with Power (MRI) = 0 and Load (MWE) = 0.
i Description of Occurrence: While replacing the leaking pump casing outboard cover gasket on Makeup Pump 1-1 on June 13, 1977, two carbon steel dowel pins were observed in the inner casing. This did not place the station into an Action i
Statement because the plant was ac this time in Cold Shutdown.
A decision was made to check Makeup Pump 1-2 for these carbon steel dowel pins.
The pump. was removed from service on July 5,1977 at 0715 hours0.00828 days <br />0.199 hours <br />0.00118 weeks <br />2.720575e-4 months <br />, but no pins The station was then in Mode 4, Hot Shutdown, requiring entry into O

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FOR LER NP-33-77-22 PAGE 2 Designation of Apparent Cause of Occurrence: Construction workers inadvertently left the carbon steel pins in the inner casing of Makeup Pump 1-1.
This per-sonnel error necessitated a check for the pins in Makeup Pump 1-2 on July 5, 1977.
Makeup Pump 1-1 was removed from service on July' 9,1977, to correct a reassembly error made on June 29, 1977.

Analysis of Occurrence: Since one makeup pump was operable and was able to handle operational loads while the other was out of service, there was no danger to the health and safety of the public or station personnel.
Corrective Action: No carbon steel pins were found in Makeup Pump 1-2.
It was declared operable at 1940 hours0.0225 days <br />0.539 hours <br />0.00321 weeks <br />7.3817e-4 months <br /> on July 8, 1977, removing the station from the Action Statement of Technical Specification 3.1.2.4.
An event of this type could not occur in the future since both Makeup Pumps have been inspected for the pins.
Maintenance work was performed on Makeup Pump 1-1, and it was declared operable
