CHANGE IN SCHEDULE FOR REPAIR OF FIRE PENETRATION BARRIER SEAL On August 8, 1989, Big Rock Point submitted Licensee Event Report (LER)89-006 describing several deficiencies found in' fire barriers and associated penetration seals. Two deficiencies were repaired immediately and a third, a penetration seal in the fire barrier separating the Electrical Equipment Room and Computer Room, was scheduled for repair.

The licensee committed to completion of this repair by October 16, 1989.

Subsequent to the licensee's submittal of the LER, further evaluation of methods of repair of the fire barrier penetration seal which separates the Electrical Equipment Room and the Computer Room was completed.

It was deter-mined that repairs to the fire barrier could not be safely completed while the I

plant remained in operation.

This is due to the difficult access to the area of the penetration seal and to the close proximity of numerous conduits and cables. The potential for inadvertent damage to conduits and cables during f

I fire barrier penetration seal repair was thought to be a significant risk to i

plant operation.

Therefore, Big Rock Point has scheduled repairs to the fire barrier separating the Electrical Equipment Room and the Computer Room to be completed at the first opportunity of a plant outage of sufficient duration to make the required repairs. One hour fire patrols, as required by Big Rock Point Technical Specification 3.7.12, will continue until repairs are completed.

No significant safety concerns will result from the course of action described i

above. Compensatory measures required by Technical Specification 3.7.12 which consist of hourly fire patrols through the affected areas will continue until repairs are completed.- Each affected area is equipped with tonir.ation-type smoke detectors which are capable of providing an early warning of a' fire in' either area.
