- Transmitters and/or spare ~ amplifiers of the type listed above.

This

- lotter is to: advise you of. deficiencies in the amplifier. requiring-

- rcplacement of all amplifiera (B0142E0) manufactured. from January 1, 1988 through September'1, 1969.

The Foxboro Company wi13 l

provide. replacement amplifiers f ree of charge, similar model l

transmitters and amplifiers of the 4-20nA output type are agg affected.

13un deficiencies are' workmanship related consisting of t 1) component i

L 1 cads wcre incorrectly soldered, and/ or 2) improper component lead I

p3sition and trimming which could lead to grounding or bridging of circuits and possible arcing of a connection, and/or 3). possible i

omission of a soldered jumper "C".

The workmanship deficiencies have been localized to a particular area

. i of the amplifier board and three specific conponents and their leads.

The components are Q3, an output transistors CR8, a sener dioder and C3, a-capacitor.

see the attached Exnibit A, Figures 1 and 2 of this notice which identifies the deficient area and components associated with the deficiencies.

Transmitter operation can be affected in the form of current output oscillations which may suddenly occur because of brid centact resistance changes from inproper connections.ging and/or In the case of p

o loose. cathode' tab connection with the zoner case, arcing will occur J

which will cause current output oscillations.

Incorrectly soldered cannections and/or a loose sener tab could individually, and in some cambinations, cause output oscillations, some amplifiers shipped as

?

cpare parts were missing the "C" jumper. Thnse amplifiers would cxperience output oscillations immediately upon test powering, thus indicating that the amplifier was unusable.

Transmitters with amplifiers which may have the workmanship

' dsficiencies were processed through manufacturing tests without the output oscillations occurring.

I Amplifiers EH11 be replaced and will nsi be repaired by Foxboro.

The 1988 to 1989 time frame has been identified through return failure i

onalysis and stock inspections as the cinly period wherein the subject cmplifier part Nanbar 30142EC has the identified-deficiencies.

E Analysis and testing determined that the deficiency was not caused by the components but by workr.anship deficiencies.

Also attached to this notification is e synopsis of test results

CONCLUSIQMS All responses to the arcing sener diode cathode lead or loss of lead contact causes initial output decrease or offsets and the magnitude varies with tranctitter cutput.

B31ow 55% of transmitter output, responses are sustained oscillations

. ith differing peak to peak amplitudes and the magnitude of output w

offset also decreasing with lower transmitter outputs.

'Above 60% of the output, responses are decremental, no sustained escillatory result and returning of the cutput to a negative output offset.

Decremental recovery occurs in fewer cycles as the output of e

l occurrence approaches 100%.
