Dear Mr. Mettler:
This is in reply to your letter dated May 5,1980, in which you requested, pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, copies of a Lucius Pitkin study done in 1971-2 of radiation levels in areas near active and inactive uranium mills in the western U.S., and a study or survey done by or under contract with the NRC in 1979 of radiation levels in the Shiprock, New Mexico, area.
In response to your request, Mr. Frank W. Karas of my staff telephoned your effice on May 20, 1980, and spoke with Mr. O' Brian, in your absence.
Mr. O' Brian was informed that we have located approximately 4,000 pages of documents which are subject to your request, and that the charges for reproducing records not located in the NRC Public Document Room is ten cents ($0.10) per page, as specified in 10 CFR 9.14(b), a _ copy of which is enclosed. Accordingl pages is approximately $y, the cost of reproducing the estimated 4,000 400.00.
On June 2,1980, in your telephone conversation with Mr. Karas you asked for a copy of the NRC's procedures to follow to request a waiver of charges for the documents you requested.
The enclosed copy of 10 CFR Part 9, under 29.14a, details the information we require to consider your request.
Mr..Karas also provided you with the addresses of the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency for your direct inquiry to those agencies for documents relating to the subjects of interest to you.
If you wish us to complete our processing of your request we will require your deposit of $400.00 to cover the estimated costs for reproducing these records. As provided in 10 CFR 9.14(b)(6), refunds of unused deposits or additional billings will be made to adjust the anticipated cost to the actual cost.
