g I'm writing to you out of concern about the Big Rock Nuclear Power Plant in Charlevoix, Michigan.
I sincerely feel that allowing the plant to remain in operation is a serious mistake. In fact, in my opinion, allowing nuclear power to be used as an alternate form of energy at all is a gross mistake on the part of the American people.
The Big Rock plant is just inviting disaster for those people living near and working at the plant, and worse, for the surrounding environment.as well.
Some examples:
The biological shield of Big Rock is insufficient to contain deadly gamma rays.
Should an accident occur (a possibility we've seen clearly demonstrated by plants in New York State, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Michigan), operators at the plant would be expected to control the reactor while receiving massive doses of radiation.
Big Rock was found to be one of the most dangerous nuclear plants in the United States by the Institute for Policy Studies and the Southwest Research Group, and Dr. Hubbard, a former B.E. nuclear specialist, has even called for its immediate shut down.
Dr. Helen Caldicott, M.D., writing of reactors in general in Time Bomb; A Nuclear Reader states, " Increasing the amount of spent fuel on-site increases the potential seriousness of an accident.
If an accident should occur in the puol or in the reactor, there could be twenty times more strontium-90 in the spent fuel pool than in the reactor itself.
The magnitude of i
damage in case of a reactor or pool accident increases with every assembly added to the spent fuel pool."
Consumers Power is at this time attempting to store more old fuel rods in Big Rock's spent fuel pool than it was even originally designed to hold.
And these are only a few of the problems connected with Big Rock, a very few.
Please Mr. Grossman, please consider the above facts carefully. Help us close the plant at Big Rock and in so doing help us help ourselves and l
our environment.
