March 24, 1980 Mr. William E. Kreger Assistant Director for Site Analysis Dir. Site Safety and Environmental Analysis Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Nuclear. Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.

Dear Mr. Kreger:
Standard Review Plan 6.1.2 covers the qualification of paint within reactor containments.
Paints covering significant surface areas are obviously intended to fall under the re-quirements of this Standard Review Plan.
However, in some situations there may be unqualified coatings on small areas.
To individually test the coating in each of these cases is difficult from a practical point of view.
It is our understanding that the Materials Engineering Branch of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has looked at this problem and does have quantitative values for the total amount of miscellaneous unqualified paint that would be acceptable in a containment.
We have heard informally that 100 kilograms of such miscellaneous unqualified paint within a containment is an acceptable value.
We would very much appreciate your clarification on this matter.
Yours very truly, M
S.
