AMERICAN MATIONAL METRIC COUNCIL, POWER GENERATION SECTOR COM-

~ -

MITTEE, FEETING IN NEW YORK ON MARCH 27, 1980 J

1.

The ASME has voted not to metricate the Be11er and Pressure Vessel Codes until there is a firmer interest from industry to make the conversion.

What is now SI (System International Metric) in the Codes will be recoved for the 1980 edition of the Code and actual metrication (dual dimensioning) may be considered in the 1983 edition of the Code.,

2.

Part of the consideration to postpone the metric conversion is that the Code will have a 30", increase in pages and the cost of the code edition would go isp proportionally. An increase in the price of the code edition was considered inappropriate at this time, partly because of the slowdown presently experienced in the use of the code.

3.

A discussion evolved on the problem with spare parts for machinery that would be expected to function for 30-40 years. The consensus was that spare parts would continue to be supplied in the original measuring system and that suppliers would retain or have machine tools that would permit production to both the SI and the U.S. Customary systems.

For certain equipment such as pumps there have been examples of the pumps being metric with the interphase flanges in the U.S. Customary system and it is perceived that installations may occur during a transition period.

4.

It was mentioned that it will be " catastrophic" for Icerican industry to stop code metrication, i.e., we stand to lose a lot of contracts. There seems to be more contracting in metric, including metric paper size, by foreign firms. As /in illustration, one firm bid on a Mexican contract and made the proposal in the SI system, while other firms made their proposal in U.S.

Customary units. The first fim got the contract although they were not more qualified for the job then the other firms.
