Dear Mr. Grier:

NRC BULLETIN NO. 80-02 INADEQUATE QUALITY ASSURANCE FOR NUCLEAR SUPPLIED EQUIPMENT NO. 1 AND 2 UNITS HOPE CREEK GENERATING STATION In reply to IE Bulletin No. 80-02, dated January 21, 1980, we offer the following:

PSE&G has reviewed Bulletin 80-02 for applicability to Hope Creek Generating Station.

We find that'it is not applicable since General Electric has not yet purchased reactor feedwater spargers and thermal sleeves for this plant.

These purchase orders are scheduled to be awarded by General Electric in the fourth week of 1982 (Unit 1) and the thirtieth week of 1984 (Unit 2).

The design function of the thermal sleeve is to prevent high thermal stresses due to the large temperature difference between the reactor vessel and the feedwater.

The reactor feedwater sparger distributes feedwater throughout the outer plenum of the reactor to insure equal flow around the vessel.

Should any additional information be desired, we will be pleased to further discuss it with you.

Very truly yours,

- y n,'. f i'. /,
