'+9.....,d MAY 1 ~ 1980 Ref: SA/J0L MEMORANDUM FOR: Richard E. Cunningham, Director Division of Fuel Cycle & Material Safety, NMSS James H. Sniezek, Director Division of Fuel Facilities & Materials Safety Inspection, IE FROM:

G. Wayne Kerr, Assistant Director for State Agreements Program Office of State Drograms

SUBJECT:

TEXAS REQUEST FOR INFORMATTON ON CONTAMINATION INCIDENT INVOLVING HOUSTON GAittA RAY C0.

We have received a request for assistance from Texas to obtain details on an incident which occurred in the 1950's involving Houston Gam. Ray Co. The company was then located at 5412 Schuler Street, Houston and, in 1963 when Texas became an Agreement State, possessed AEC license no. 42-01349-04.

According to information supplied to Texas, the licensee had an incident in the 1950's involving a ruptured Cs-137 source. The material was originally buried on-site but 2-3 months later was removed and shipped off-site. Texas has surveyed the Schuler Street address and found contamination.

Gamma levels are twice background in the soil and up to 100 X background on concrete surfaces.

Any light we are able to shed on this will be appreciated by Texas.

G. Wayn err, Assistant Director for State Agreements Program Office of State Programs
