WASHINGTON. D. C. 20555

,YOl OCT li 1979 MEMORANDUM FOR:,

111am T. Russeli, e.cting Chief, Technical Support Branch, NRR FRCM:

Richard H. Vollmer, Director, Three Mile Island 2 Support

SUBJECT:

LONG RANGE RESEARCH PLAN - WATER REACTOR SAFETY RESEARCH Mr. Al Ignatonis of my staff provided the following comments on the draft research plan.

1) The time frame of safety and relief valve testing is inconsistent with the NRR Lessons Learned Task Force recommendations. They recomend program completion by July,1981.
2) The Research Support Branch should clarify if they will assist NRR in examining the interaction of safety and non-safety grade equipment used for terminating transients and accidents.
3) With regards to the Fuel Behavior Branch's work, I do not see a need for continued RIA and PCM experimentsin PBF.

In general, however, there was insufficient information provided to permit us j

to do a detailed review.
