Dear Congressman Archer:
In response to the request by Mr. Hostetter concerning hypothetical fuel melting accidents, which is addressed in Recommendation D.4 of the Report of the President's Commission on the Accident at Three Mile Island, enclosed are the relevant sections of the I;RC Action Plan Developed as a Result of the TMI-2 Accident (NUREG-0660). These sections provide a summary description and schedule of the actions the NRC has or currently intends to take regarding the consideration of degraded or melted cores in safety reviews. Also enclosed is a copy of the " Technical Staff Analysis Report on Alternative Event Sequences to the President's Commission on the Accident at Three Mile Island," by William R. Stratton, et al, dated October 1979 which was requested.
