Dear Congressman Ertel:
I am writing in response to your note of March 28, 1980, to Mr. Carlton Karanerer regarding the telephone call of March 27, 1980, from your constituent, Mr. Orville Kelley.
Mr. Kelley suggested that the krypton in the reactor building at Three Mile Island, Unit 2 (TMI-2), could be removed by vacuum pumps and put in containers for long-term storage.
The idea proposed by Mr. Kelley is currently under consideration as an alternative for removing the krypton from TMI-2.
Information on this method is contained in NRC's Environmental Assessment for krypton removal (NUREG-0662}, a copy of which is enclosed.
(See Section 6.3, " Gas Compression System.") Also enclosed are two Addenda to the Environmental Assessment.
