Dn May7, ~.1980 at approximately 11:00 P'.M. a 24 year old guard emoloyed by Inter-
,-g. state Security Services and assigned to the UNC Naval Products Facility. shot him-
..~.4.self in the head with his service revolver.
He was assigned to a vehicle oatrol
+';of the outside of the perimeter of the protected area. At 11:02 P.M. when the Central Alarm. Station operator failed to make contact by radio with the guard, two other security force personnel were sent to investigate.
The victim was found
--... alive and slumped over the steering wheel in the patrol vehicle.
llis weapon was
'. _ ~ in his hand and one shot had been fired. He was transported by ambulance to
. -the Lawrence and Memorial llespital where he later died.
Media interest is expected. The licensee has issued a press release. No press 742: release is planned by the NRC at this time.

The State of Connecticut has been informed. The IAT has been advised.
This Preliminary Notification is issued for information purposes and no further action by IE is anticipated.
