The Health Committee of the Suf folk County Legislature is charged vith the responsibility of studying issues relating to the health and cafety of the people of Suffolk County and recommending appropriate govern-mental action in light of its findings.
In view of the planned operation of the Shoreham Nuclear Power Station (SNPS) in late 1981, the Health Com-mittee deems it prudent to hold public hearings on a number of important icsues, particularly radiation exposure and emergency preparedness plan-ning, in order to receive input from the involved governmental and reguls-

tory agencies, the utility company, and the public, and to educate and prepare the county agencies and the public for the emergency planning at the earliest possible stage.
The hearings will be held on April 30, May 8,19 and May 28, the location, time and agenda are enclosed for your re-forence.

Health and Safety Impact of the Shoreham Nuclear Power Station (SNPS)

PURPOSE: To receive testimony on the potential impact of the operation of SNPS to the health, safety, and welfare of the people of Suffolk County, particularly with respect to radiation exposure and evacuation planning, and to determine the appropriate role of the county government in promoting the public health, safety, and welfare.

speaker will be limited to 5 minutes. Persons wishing to address the committee should fill out a speakers card before the hearing and direct comments to any of the following areas:
- 1) Does SNPS have, or can it develop evacuation plans?
- 2) What are the radiological, economic, and long term health effects of an on site emergency?
3)Should the county have formal testing of evacuation plans?
4)What is the state of the counties medical, health, and hospital preparedness?

- 5) What is the impact on Suf folk County's water supply from radiological contamination during routine and accidental conditiors?
- 6) What are the health and safety impacts of the transport of rad-iological was ces from, and the decommissioning of, the SNPS?
- 7) What is the current status of decommissioning"the SNPS?
- 8) Has SNPS been constructed safely in accordance with safety requir-ements and should there be a complete physical inspection prior to operation?
In selecting anpronriate dates to testify, thy following is suaaested; Issues involving the various departments of county government; April 30, 7om in Hauppauce at the Legislative Blda.
Issues involving town and local officials ( principally in the Shoreham Wading River area; May 8, 7pm at the Shoreham Wading River Hiah School Issues relating to Federal, State, and local coordination, and emergency planning; May 19, 10am at the Riverhead County Center And issues regarding radiation, monitoring, routine and unplanned releases, and any remaining agenda from the May 19th hearing; May 28, 10am in Haunpauce at the Legislative Bldq.
