20555 ATTENTION:

Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director

Dear Sir:

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-416 and 50-417 File 0260/L-860.0/0630 Grand Gulf Safety Review Schedule AECM-80/95 Thank you for meeting with us on April 14, 1980, to discuss the safety review schedule and licensing status of our Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Unit 1.

We felt the meeting was quite productive in helping us understand your plans for conducting our operating license review.

It is our hope that we adequately conveyed to you and your staff the magnitude and resolve of our commitment to finish plant construction and testing in order to meet our August 31, 1981, fuel load date, and to provide information to your staff in a comprehensive and timely manner such that your activities may also be accomplished by that time.

During the meeting you suggested several mechanisms by which we may be able to expedite our collective activities to complete the safety review. We were already implementing some of these suggestions at the time of the meeting.

The others appear to have the potential for facilitating exchange of informa-tion with your staff and we are proceeding on them as well. An example is the draf t of SER Sections 3.6 through 3.10 which was developed by your Mechanical Engineering Branch and transmitted to us for answers to the open issues. We are preparing for a meeting with your staff in mid-June to address these open issues and demonstrate to them the adequacy of our mechanical design.

We agreed during the meeting that it would be prudent for your staff and ours to develop a joint list of issues that will need to be addressed in order for the Regulatory Staff to complete its review of our operating license application. By so doing, all these issues would receive timely attention.

Accordingly, we have scheduled a tentative meeting with your Mr. T. C. Houghton for the week of May 27 to accomplish this task. May we have confirmation that the staff will be prepared to meet with us at that time?

You suggested the possibility of establishing an ACRS Subcommittee in the near future so that the members could begin familiarizing themselves with the Grand Gul.' docket. This would allow certain key issues to be identified and N

Again Mr. Denton, thank you for your attention to our concerns and your verbal commitment that you could support the Grand Gulf schedule for an operating license by September,1981, given the known scope of caseload work confronting the Staff at present.

I shall look forward to hearing from you.
