Docket No. 50-409 Ms. Ellen Brooks Route 1. Box 92 Gays Mills, Wisconsin 54631

Dear Ms. Brooks:

This is in response to your letter dated March 20, 1980, requesting that hearings relating to the Lacrosse Boiling Water Reactor (LACBWR) be held in Lacrosse, Wisconsin.

h A hearing may be held in the Lacrosse area by the Atomic Safety and Licensing J

Board in the near future to consider evidence addressing several environmental contentions submitted by the Coulee Region Energy Coalition for hearing in connection with Dairyland's 1974 application for conversion of its provisional operating license to a full-term license. At the conclusion of the hearing the Licensing Board will decide if the environmental impacts of granting a full-term license for the '..ACBWR would preclude issuance of the license by the Comission.

j The cancelled hearing you refer to is apparantly the January 11, 1980 meeting Dairyland, not the NRC, initiated to discuss the projected operating lifetime of LACBWR. The. NRC staff, therefore, had no control over its cancellation.

l This meeting was to have been held in Bethesda, Maryland.

f However, with respect to this cancelled meeting, I, on January 15, 1980, advised Ms. Ann Morse, an intervenor in the LACBWR proceeding, that if the meeting on l

the projected operating lifetime of LACBWR is rescheduled, the NRC staff would hold such a meeting in the Lacrosse area. Please be assured that if such a meeting is rescheduled it would be held in Lacrosse, Wisconsin, and notice will be provided so that interested persons will be aware of the date, time and location.

Thank you for your concern and interest in nuclear safety.

Sincerely, WYW Ricard H. Vollmer l

Acting Assistant Director Systematic Evaluation Program, D0R e
