Dear Mr. Stello:

Our e>perience in the design and licensing of nu lear pctier plants has indicated a need for more definitive design and c assification criteria for safety related electrical equipment.

JEEE-27 is appropriate for s

electrical equipment used to shutdown the reactor and actuate engineered safety featurcs systems.

However, this IEEE Standard is r.ot easily j

extended to other applications and is overly restrictive cnd costly for some equip:nont that is related to safety only in t secondary nanner, e.n., enoinwnt usert to verifv plant operating conditien prior in 3

Accordingly, Ucstinghouse has dcVeloped " Criteria for Saicty Related Electrical Equipment for Nuclear Porter Generatin Stations", s;hich is enclosed f or your review and corrment. These cri ria classify elec-trical equipment according to safety classes in ough correspondance 1

to the nachaaical equipment categories of Af!SI-hi8.2-1973, "Huclear Safety Criteria for the Design of Pressurized Unter Reacier "lants".

our irient to apply the enclosed criteria.in the de';i 1 of plants It i::
