1 Tacility: Metropolitan Edison Company Three Mile Island, Unit 2 Middletown, Pennsylvania Docket Number ' 50-320

Subject:

TMI 2 Cround Water Mon 1toring Program Over the past few months eight ground water monitoring wells were drilled in various locations around the Unit 2 reactor building to detect leakage from the reactor building sump. Initial samples from the wells have been analyzed.

Samples from seven welle.

indicate tritium activity in the 1.6 x 10-7 to 9.9 x 10-7 uCi/mi range. Trittum activity in wcli No. 2 was initially 1.53 x 10-6 uCi/ml.

After the initial well water conten pumped out, a second sample was taken and indicated a tritium activity of 2.50 x 10 g was uti/ml.

Well No. 2 is located approximately 50 feet from the boraled water storage tank and 200 te::L from the reactor building.

Water samples from several wells were brown colored.

The source of the color was not determined.

1.icensee and NRC representatives are out' lining a program to determine the e.nurce of the tritium activity and the reason for the water disculurdLion.

Natural background tritium activity in the area as recorded by the EPA _is 2.00 x 10-7 uCi/ml.

Media interest is expected because off site notification of this data was made by the licensee.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been notitied.

A Dress release is not plannet by the licensee or the NRC.
