FEB a Mr. Jacob L. Susskind 120 N. Union Street Middletown, Pennsylvania 17057
Dear Mr. Susskind:
I am writing in response to your letter to Chairman Ahearne of January 28, 1980.
With regard to your concern about the release of radioactive gases from the reactor building of Three Mile Island, Unit 2, such releases are not currently permitted. Metropolitan Edison Co@any has submitted to NRC a " Safety Analysis and Environsental Report" (November 12,1979) in which they evaluated alternative methods for the disposal of the krypton gases, such as venting and cryogenic processing. Before authorizing venting or any othar disposal methods of the krypton gas, NRC will prepare an Environmental Assessment to determine potential environmental effects of the alternative nethods and will request public coments on the assessment.
The Comission has also decided that concerned citizens should be given the opportunity to present their views orally at a public seeting prior to any approval of proposals to dispose of radioactive gases in the THI, Unit 2, reactor building. By this course of action, we will assure that a thorough assessment is co@leted prior to disposal of the contaminated gases, and that the health and safety of the off-site population will be protected.
I appreciate your concerns and assure you that every effort is being made to ensure the continued protection of the health and safety of the public, not only at the Three Mile Island Station, but also at all nuclear power plants.
Sincerely, Original Siped by H. R. Denton Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation i

Dear Commissioner Ahearne:
I am writing to you regarding the proposed release of Krypton from TMI.
If such a plan is carried out, I'think that this would be a flagrant disregard for the residents of the Middletown area.
I am opposed to any further radioactive rel2ases from TMI.
I urge you to speak out in our behalf.
I would appreciate your views on this vital matter.
Sincerely, LC Jacob L. Susskind f
