THE UNIVERSITY OF" TENNESSEE KNOXVILLE TENNESSEE 37916 oEPARTMENT oF NUCLEAR ENGINEERING mucttan aw:; merainc auuiwo Taterwows.as si sta asas November 13, 1979 i

Commissioner Joseph Hendrie Chairman, Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.

20555 Dear Commissioner Hendrie It is with great concern that I write this letter. My concern is generated from the so-called licensing freeze and its effect on our ability to meet the energy needs of the nation and its effect on our ability to attract and retain students in nuclear engineering programs.

The uncertainty of the duration of the non-licensing period will have a great effect on the career decisicrs that are being made by our youth.

This in turn will impact the nuclear industry several years in the future when the supply of nuclear engineers will in no way meet the demand. A quick affirmative resolution to the licensing issue will do a great deal to bolster the confidence of our nation and youth in the nuclec.r genera-tion of electricity.

I appreciate the support that you have shown for nuclear energy.

Sincerely P. F. Pasqua, Head Nuclear Engineering Department PFP/cc CC: Mr. Harold Denton Senator Howard Baker Senator James Sasser 8002130 9 0
