NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION g._

l WASHINGTON, D. c. 20555

%,...../

JAN 8 1980 Mr. David Pagnucco 501 Pauline Ann Arbor, MI 48103

Dear Mr. Pagnucco:

I am writing in response to your letter of April 23, 1979 to the Commission conce::ning the radiation f rom Three Mile Island.

I apologize that my reply is not in time to meet your needs.

A summary of the report " Population Dose and Health Impact of the Accident at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Station" (NUREG-0558) is enclosed. This gives estimates of the radiation doses to individuals and the general population during the week of the accident. During the time period you were planning to be in llarrisburg, the doses due to the accident would have been virtually indistinguishable from those due to natural background radiation.

1 appreciate your concerns and assure you that every effort is being made to ensure the cor inued protection of the health and safety of the public, not only at the Three Mile Island Station, but also at all nuclear power plants.

Sincerely, A

Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Encl: Summary of NUREG-0558 l
