Alvin Furtow Ch wman of tre Board November 30, 1979 Mr. liarold R. Denton, Director Nuclear Reactor Regulation 1717 H Street, Northwest Washington, D. C. 20555
Dear Mr. Denton:
I am writing to ask your assistance in overturning the decision to stop issuing construction permits and operaung licenses for nuclear power plants. It is my understanding that the treeze could last any where from six months up to two years.
I am sure you are aware there are seven nuclear units awaiting issuance of licenses that would allow them to begin commercial operations. A typical reactor displaces approximately 10 million barrels of oil a year. These nuclear facilities could be helping the United States offset the oil we are losing because of the Iraninn shut-off.
I would appreciate your giving this request your serious consideration as the decision could have a profound impact on the entire nation.
Yours truly,
,/
