EDWARD...? ALKENSTEIN 30 KILCHEASE CIRCLE PARADISE, CALIFORNIA 95969 August 24, 1979 Joseph H. Hendrie, Chrmn Nuclear Regulatory Comessn.
1717 H Street W Washington
Dear Sir:
Our TV told us this morning that your commission was quite roundly scolded by a commission looking into the 3-nile situ-ation. Your were scolded because you are thinking of permitting certain nuclear plants to open before this second commission had reported on 3-mile. I gather that they are not only looking at 3-mile but also at the use of nuclear enerEy over the country in gen-eral.
For one it is the opinion of a number of us here that entirely too much hysteria has ruled the nuclear situation since the 3-mile incident.,A careful observation of those plants in Cal-ifornia certainly do not bear out the criticism that is being pushed 0
around our state. Tlie plants at Eureka, Sacramento and the one on the coast. north of San Diego have all performed without trouble.
Even so our governor wanted to close the SMUD plant at Sacramento and he has a crowd of followers unable to see the situation properly.
This letter is to urce you to proceed with the openings you plan. The huge PG&E plant near San Luis Obispo should be opened and the public be given the advantage of its productivity. Also the capital involved there should not be required to wait much longer before it gets its proper return. I hope your commission will pro-ceed normily to handle this nuclear situation, and will overlook the hysteria that has claimed so many persons.
Very truly yours,
//[,
