p_ c SPR #386 8:bcock&Wilcox 620-001k 11/2/77 i i Descrittien of Preble=: -L On 10/13/77, the electrematic relief valve vcs tested after the completion of re; irs as cutlined in ST2 #269. Se tc.1te va: cycled six times success-fully. On the seventh test cycle the pilot valve did not close. The ERV l vas isolated and permitted to cool down while waiting for Crosby representa- -tives. Crosby rep., Walt Conroy, arri ed and the pilot valve asse=bly was removed l from the main valve. Disassembly of the pilot valve revealed that the pilot valve stem had stuck open due to the cicse tolerance causing a binding con-g dition between the O.D. of the stem and the I. D. of the pilot valve nos le. Also, a smil cetal particle was found in the pilot stes/nossle area. Sub-sequent cleaning of the inlet piping to the ERV revealed this same type of metal particles. Se Crosby representative furnishei a detailed drawing of the pilot valve stem requiring a dia=eter of.37h This was changed to read.373 dia=eter 373 * .372 i by the Crosby rep., and the stes was modified accordingly by TECo Maintenance -under the direction of the Crosby rep. This modification resulted in opening the cicarance between the sten and the no::le thus eli=inating the binding. he ne::le was also ~--a4 out viti a re::er the sa e si:e, no =aterial was removed. All parts vere cleaned and asse bled. The solenoid linkage was adjusted to drop the adjust $ int bolt more squarely on the disc actuator. In addition, the adjust =ent bolt was positiened to cote the pilot valve stem off the seat a maximum of.125". It had been =oving off the sent sc=e.375". De pilot valve vas tested'vith5ut ~prc~ssure by actuating the solenoid three ti=es. Se talte v.s tested again twice with 5 cr 6 secends between tests. -Ris was followed by testing the valve five more tires assuring actuation each tine' by a ce+-ut~e delay"cet-Jeen tests. The valve was tested with a _. pressure of 1100 psig.on_.the second and third occasion. =- h. h86 N**** .Ti.A:nif '*:'~ _ : U _m 44 +. r- ;:-

Para. 4.2.2.2, Crosby instruction No. I-1115 is correct as written and should be followed. Proper adjust =cnt of the solenoid adjusting bolt can be further checked as follows: Move the solenoid plunger to full stroke by pushing to the Rhximum position. The Disc Actuator Pilot Valve (19) will be depressed by the adjusting bolt (31) with the plunger in this position. If the adjusting bolt (31) were to be backed off a distance of approxi=ately 5/32" (which could be accomplished by allowing the pluger to drop from its full upward position), the adjusting bolt (31) should be just beginning to make con-tact with the disc actuator pilot valve (19). Should the con-dition prevail, with the adjusting bolt (31) is making contact with, or is moving the disc pilot valve (19) below the free , position, the adjust =ent is not correct and should be reset per instruction I-1115, Fr.ra. 4.2.2.2. Dear Terry:
'Ihe referenced instruction =anual pertains tc the pressuricer power relief valve R02A. Sectica h of the -- uci describes the testing and adjust =ent procedure for the valve, while section 4. 2 pertains to adjustments for Proper pilot valve actuation. ~ A critical adjust =ent is that described in step h.2.2.2, Setting of the Adjusting Bolt (P/3 31). All adjust =ents should be =ade per the instructicn snanual, however, proper adjustment of the solenoid adjustment bolt can be further checkec as fellevs: Move the scienoid plu.cer to *ull streke by pushing to the =axi=u= position. The Disc Actuator Pilot Valve (19) vill be depressed by the adjusting bolt (31) with the plunger in this position. If the adjusting bolt (31) were to be backed off a distance of approximate-Jy 5/32" (which eculd be acec pliched by allering the plunger to drop frc= its full upward position), the adjusting bolt (31) should be just beginning to ~*e contact with the dice cetuator pilot valve (19). Should the condition prevail, with the ndjucting bolt (31) =aking contac: vith, or 1: =oving the disc pilot velve (19) belev the free position, the adjustr.ent is not correct and should be re-set per instructica I-1115, Fr.rn. h.2.2.2. .L I Th.
