Three Mile Island Unic #2

Dear Vic:

Attached is a copy of the tenativa standard on High Efficiency Cas-Phase absorber col'Lo (AACC Designation SC-ST) that we discussed at the meeting in Philadelphia last anonth.

The CS-8T was prepared by a subcoccittee of which Mr. C. A. Burchsted and Mr. H. Gilbert were nenbers. The flat bed type or tray type of cell is similar in design and construction to the cells being supplied on Three Hile Island Unit #2. The obvious descrepancy in their recommended design and the units being supplied are the cell lengths. The CS-ST recoreended length is 30" where as the Three Mila Island design calls for 40" long cells.

MSA feels that the 40" long design nay cause possible probica areas in the AEC Licensing requirements. The following problem areas may occur 1.

Substantial ecil weight increase ear.cs change-out problems.

Two ::an minit:u:n will be required to re: nova.

2.

Longer cells can cresta possible void areas in refilling.

l 3.

Longer cell calls for longer perforated screens and, therefore, more support areas and possible dead area;.

Again, reay I point out that possible AEC Licensing problems may occur and MSA recornends to adopt the 30" long design. Your coments on the above t

l will be appreciated, should you have any additional questions, please don't

, hesitate to call.

Sincerely, gpg ggy p
