Dear Sir:
Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 1 (TMI-1)
Operating License No. DPR-50 Docket No. 50-289 Fire Protection Program Supplement No. 1 (dated March 16, 1979) to the Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit No. 1 Fire Protection Safety Evaluation Report (FPSER) dated September 19,1978, requires implementation of Table 3.1 items 3.1.9, Fire Barrier Penetrations, and 3.1.15, Electrical Cable Penetration Seals, be completed by April 15, 1979. As a result of the March 28, 1979 incident at 1MI-2, imple'nentation of the above modifications was discontinued, and the contractor was temporarily released. Consequently, it vill not be possible to complet.e implementation of these modifications by April 15, 1979 Metropolitan Edison Company therefore requests that NRC issue a supplement to the FPSER extending the implementation date of Table 3.1 items 3.1.9 and 3.1.15 to April 27, 1979 Met-Ed further requests that the supplement be effective on April 15, 1979 TMI-1 is currently in a cold shutdown condition and is expected to remain shutdown, requiring significant advance notice to NRC prior to commencing Cycle 5 operation. Therefore, extending the implementation date of these modifications does not affect TMT-l's capability of obtaining cold shutdown in the event of a fire.
Sincere y,
/
