t Harch 23, 1979 GQL 0440 Metropolitan Edison Company Three Mile Island Nuclear Station Noncompliance Notification 79-02 1.
Description of Noncompliance On March 7, 1979, a sample was taken from the Industrial Waste Treatment System (IWTS) discharge (NPDES Discharge 107) which yielded an iron concentration of 3.12 mg/1.
Assuming the entire discharge (approximately 108,620 gallons) had a 3.12 mg/l iron concentration, the total iron discharge would have been 2.83 pounds which exceeds the 2.4 pounds / day limit.
II.
Corrective / Preventive Actions The air floatation portion of the IWTS has two skimmers which normally remove pollutants from the water. One of the skimmers was out of service due to a broken shaf t.
It is believed that the noncompliance was caused as a result of this mechanical failure.
As a corrective action, the skimmer will be repaired and returned to service.
III.
Previous Noncompliances of the Present Type None IV.
Environmental Impact Evaluation As the degree of the iron noncompliance was not extreme and the fact that iron has not been classified as a toxic pollutant, it is believed that no significant environmental impact was caused.
