June 12, 1980 CHAIRMAN The Honorable Robert List Governor of Nevada Carson City, Nevada 89710
Dear Governor List:
Thank you for your letter of May 12, 1980.
I am pleased to receive your confirmation of reports from my staff that progress has been made in cooperativ 3 efforts to reduce packaging and transport problems.
I understand that our fourth bi-monthly report will soon be released and that it will show continued progress ~ y the low level waste burial o
States and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
I agree with you that it is now appropriate to discontinue the full time NRC inspection coverage at Beatty.
NRC inspectors will, of course, continue to visit the Beatty site from time-to-time, and NRC will continue to conduct inspections of the waste packaging and transportation activities of NRC licensees. We intend to issue periodic reports of the results of these inspections.
I am pleased to learn that Nevada has submitted a. contract proposal for joint NRC/ Department of Transportation funding for surveillance of trans-portation of radioactive material in the State. The staff expects to forward the contract to Nevada for signature shortly. By cooperative efforts such as this, we can together achieve the improvements needed to continue the handling of radioactive materials.
Si.erely, Jo1r F. Ahearne Chairman 8007230936
