50-321 Atlaata, Georgia 30303 I&E Bulletin 79-14 ATTENTION: Mr. James P. O'Reilly Gentlemen:
Our letter of February 29, 1980, regarding I&E Bulletin 79-14, re-quested an extention to August 1,1980, to complete verification of seismic analysis of as-built piping systems in accessible areas. At the time, it was estimated that resurveillance would be completed by May 1, 1980, with engineering verification completed in the following 12 weeks.
A total of 2,324 hangers required resurveillance, of which 1,480 were in normally accessible areas during plant operation. A total of 22,112 manhours was spent inspecting, reviewing and approving these hangers. By April 24, 1980 the hanger surveillance field work was com-pleted in accessible areas and all packages had been forwarded to Bechtel for engineering analysis.
Bechtel received 141 packages for accessible areas. As of July 14, 1980, pipe support evaluation was 66% complete for these packages. Addi-tionally,100 packages were selected for pipe stress evaluation. Stress modeling is 73% complete for accessible areas. Computer re-analysis of selected stress models will procede when the initial evaluation has been completed.
Of the approximately 1,000 hangers evaluated so far, a total of 2 LERs has been found and reported.
Despite the significant progress made, Bechtel has been faced with an unforeseen workload from other plant problems, and there is now little possibility that the August 1, 1980 deadline will be met.
. Based on the progress made and the small number of reportable occur-ences, we hereby request an extention to October 1,1980 to complete the verification of the seismic analysis of as-built piping systems.

Sur-veillance of inaccessible areas will be completed by the next refueling outage. We again point out that the verification of Unit 2 design, and the analysis.of the Unit I data to date would indicate that continued operation during this period of verification is not unsafe and the public's health and safety are not adversely affected.
