h MEM0PANDUM FOR:

Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation FROM:

Joseph D. Lafleur, Jr., Deputy Director Office of International Programs

SUBJECT:

BRITISH TECHNICAL INQUIRY The UK Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII) indicated in a recent telex that the following technical questions (related to TMI-2 reactor pressurizer water level instrumentation) were submitted to NRC in December 1979:

(A)

Is the upper tapping from the pressurizer steam space filled by design with condensate (in normal operation) to a fiduciary level?

(B) What are the approximate temperatures of the condensate at the pressurizer and DP cell ends of the tapping during normal operation?

(C) How long are the upper and lower tappings?

(D)

Is there any feature of the tappings / condensate which causes the pressurizer level instrumentation to be regarded as unreliable in the presence of a leak at the top of the pressurizer? If so, what?

Although I have been unable to confirm original receipt of these questions, or whether they have previously been submitted to the staff for response, I would appreciate NRR's timely review of the questions at this time and preparation of brief responses at the earliest opportunity.

Please advise Bob Senseney, (49-27788) IP, whether NRR can accommodate this request and, if so, the name of the staff member who will handle it.
