July 11, 1980 Mr. Marc'W. Goldsmith Energy Research Group, Inc.

400-1 Totten Pond Road Waltham, Massachusetts 02154 In the Matter of Long Island Lighting Company (Shoreham Nuclear Power Station, Unit 1)

Docket No. 50-322

Dear Mr. Goldsmith:

In response to your December 1979 request for infomation on County Contention 4a(xi)

(" passive mechanical valve failures"), the Staff has searched the Licensee Event Report (LER) data base on valve stem or valve disc events (from 1969 to July 8, 1980). As Jerry Wilson discussed with Bob Capstick, by telephone on July 8,1980, the enclosed LER printout contains additional valve failures over and above the specific failure identified in the County's above-referenced contention.

Mr. Capstick indicated that the enclosed printout would be an acceptable response to your request for infomation.

Additionally, at our last meeting at Shoreham in June, during the discussion of County Contention 3(a)(1) and (ii), the Staff agreed to provide you with the latest status reports on ACRS generic issues. Accordingly, I now enclose copies of the following letters (ACRS status reports):

(1) Ltr fm Harold R. Denton, Director, Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation to Dr. Stephen Lawroski, Chairman, Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards dated December 4, 1978, and (2) Ltr fm Max W. Carbon, Chaiman, Advisory Comittee on Reactor Safeguards to Joseph M. Hendrie, Chairman, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Comission dated March 21, 1979.

Sincerely, b
