NSF NORTHERN STATES POWER COMPANY MIN N E A PO LI S. M I N N E S OTA 5 5401 July _7, 1980 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U S Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555 PRAIRIE ISLAND NUCLEAR GENERATING PLANT Docket Nos. 50-282 License Nos. DPR-42 50-306 DPR-60 Demonstration of Ultrasonic Inspection Method for Detecting Underclad Cracking in the Reactor Vessel Nozzle Region In our letter dated December 28, 1979 we outlined our plans to. inspect the outlet nozzles of both Prairie Island reactor vessels for underclad cracking. The Unit No.1 inspection is scheduled for the refueling outage beginning next month.

The Unit No. 2 inspection will take place during the 1981 refueling outage.

The nozzle inspection will be conducted using the immersion search unit developed by Westinghouse Corporation for use with their reactor vessel remote inservice inspection tool. Because the Prairie Island Unit No.1 inspection will be the first time this equipment has been used on an operating plant, Northern States Power Company and the Westinghouse Corporation have scheduled a demonstration for interested staff members of the NRC Offices of Nuclear Reactor Regulation and Inspection and Enforcement. Following informal contacts with members of the NRC Staff, the following time and place has been selected for this demonstration:

Westinghouse Waltz Mill Nuclear Service Division Facility July 23,1980 at 1 PM NRC visitors should ask for Mr Bill Ziter upon reporting to the Waltz Mill site.

The intent of this denonstration is to demonstrate the inspection technique and address all questions concerning the underclad inspection equipment and procedures.

It is believed that this will expedite the conduct of the actual inspection at the Prairie Island site.

Please contact us if you have any questions or any conflicts with the schedule present.ed above, cc'o.
