MEMORANDUM FOR:

'j FROM:
O. Rothberg, N. Chokshi, N. Rceney & H. Lee, SEB/DE
SUBJECT:
NORTH Art.*lA UrlIT 2 TRIP REPORT Members of the Structural Engineering Branch Staff, Division of Engineering, visited the North Anna Unit 2 Nuclear Generating Station on. June 5, 1980.
We met with Vepco personnel: Mr. Charles E. Sorrell, Supervisor, Civil Engineering Service. Mr. H. J. Fortune, Jr., Director of Engineering Service and S & W representative: Mr. Bob Howe.
Vepco personnel stated that they had an agreement with the NRC Project Manager of North Anna Unit 2, Mr. A. Dromerick, that Vepco would not answer'any question contained in the letter " Request for Information on the Use of Category I Masonry Walls" for North Anna Unit 2.
Instead, Vepco would submit formal
~
response to IE Bulletin 80-11 for both of North Anna Units 1 and 2 on or before July 8, 1980. They stated that although they were not in the position to answer any question at this time, they had identified all Masonry block walls in the plant and would.be happy to conduct a tour of the accessible plant areas so that we could observe the walls.
We went through the Service Building (Control Room / Computer Romm/ Mech. Equip-ment), Turbine Building, Aux. Building and the Fuel Building. We found no visual cracks of the walls as a result of uneven settlements or shrinkage.
Mr. Howe of S & W indicated that he was not the original designer. Hence, he had no knowledge of how the walls were designed and constructed.
It doesn't look that walls carry any significant loads. The walls are generally used for partition purpose or for radiation shielding and we have found no safety related piping supported by the walls. Hcwever, we have some reservations about the capability of two walls to sustain seismic loads because of their size and support conditions. The two walls in question are the wall located in the Mech. Equipment Room of the Service Building and the wall between the Aux. Building and the Fuel Building.
Vepco personnel indicated that they were in the process of accessing the safety significances and identifying the design bases of these walls as part of their responses to IE Bulletin 80-11.
. We took about_ fifteen (15) photographs for the various walls, penetrations and supports. Mr. Sorrell of Vepco has asked for copies of the photos we took but in return he premised to send us a set of lay-out drawings with all Masonry walls marked on the drawings.
