19406 License No. DPR-35 Docket No. 50-293 IE Bulletin #79-18 Report Following Refueling Outage Ref. (a) BECo. Letr. (G. ' C. Andognini) to NRC (B. H. Grier) titled " Response to IE Bulletin #79-18" dated November 23, 1979

Dear Sir:

In accordance with the requirements of IE Bulletin #79-18, an audibility survey on the alarm / evacuation system was conducted at Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station.

Reference (a) provided you with the findings of those surveys performed and included a list of areas to be surveyed during our refueling outage. This letter provides you with a report on the results of the outage survey and a schedule for completion of corrective actions in this area as delineated below.

All necessary repairs to equipment in areas found inaudibic were performed during the outage.

Ten areas were identified as needing additional measures for adequate audibility (Attachment.A). Five of these are High Radiation areas and current administrative controls require a two man team for entry. The second man remains outside the area and would alert the other should evacuation be necessary. Therefore, no further corrective actions are planned for these areas.

The other.five areas require the installation of speakers to provide adequate audibility evacuation signals. Installation of these speakers will be completed by September 15, 1980.

We trust this letter adequately addresses your concerns. However, if you should have any questions concerning this response, please contact us at your convenience.

b Very truly yours,
