Non-Routine, Non Radiological Environmental Report No. 50-313/75-23 2.

Report Date:

March 7, 1975-3.

Occurrence Date:

February 26, 1975 4.

Facility:

Arkansas Nuclear One-Unit 1 Russellville, Arkansas 5.

, Identification of Occurrence:

Fish kill on intake screens exceeding 3000 pounds based on 8-hour sample period.

6.

Conditi'ons Prior to Occurrence:

S'.tady-State Power-X Reactor Power 1350 MWth f

Ilot Standby Net Output 400 MWe Cold Shutdown Percent of Full Power 52.5 %

Refueling Shutdown Routine Startup Operation O

Routine Shutdown Operation Load Changes During Routine Power Operation Other (6pecify)

Four ci cculating water pumps were in operation.

s 7.

Description of Occurrence:

During routine fish impingement monitoring 2/25/75 using procedure 1607.10,' Monitoring' Fish Impinged on ANO-1 Intake Screens,1220 pounds of fish were collected during an 8-hour sample period.

The projected fish kill for the 24-hour period beginning at 8:00 a.m. 2/25/75 and' ending at 8:00 a.m. 2/26/75 was 3660 pounds based on the 8-hour sample.

A mixture of gi::ard and threadfin shad made up 99.9% of the total weight of fish.

Other fish made up 0.1% of the total weight.

Threadfin shad made up 78% of the total number of shad.

Intake water temperature, taken at 4:30 p.m. 2/25/75, was 45'F, and ambient air ter >crature was 59'F.

Non-Routine, Non-Radiological Environmental Report No. 50-313/75 23 8.

Designation of Apparent Cause of Occurrence:

Design Procedure Manufacture Unusual Service Condition Including Installation /

Environmental Construction Component Failure Operator Other (Specify)

The apparent cause was due to a natural die off of.

Threadfin < Shad during the winter season.

9.

Analysis of Occurrence:

{N There has apparently been no adverse environmental impact due to the large t

)

numbers of shad being impinged at the intake of ANO-1.. Wintertime mortality of threa'dfin shad due to low temperatures is not unusual due to their lack of resistance to low water temperatures. The ANO-1 intake screens only collect the shad after they become unable to resist the intake current due to lethargy caused by a decrease in water temperature.

~

Due to their-fecundity, threadfin shad can withstan'd a ' substantial decregse in population each. winter and still mairtain a population suitable for forage by game fish.

r!

The fish that were collected during sampling periods were disposed of through landfill operation. The fish that were not collected were ground in a trash grinder and returned to Lake Dardanelle.

10.

CORRECTIVE ACTION:

~

Long term studies are in progress to determine the effects of plant operation on the Aquatic ecosystems of the Dardanelle Reservoir Data from this report and other. data obtained is fed back into these studies to determine what changes might be made to the, studies in order to ensure that adequate data is obtained for evaluating-plant impact. Review by Arkansas Power 6 Light and its consultants of the results of these studies will determine what corrective action might be taken to reduce plant effects on the Res.ervoir.
