Gentlemen:
This is in response to your letter of May 13, 1974, wherein an apparent violation was reported concerning calibration of test equipment in use during the automated baseline inspection of the Arkansas Nuclear One, Unit Orte vessel.
Upon notification by your inspector, Mr. A. R. Herdt, that we were in vio-lation, we immediately reviewed the equipment in question which was still in l
use at the time.
7 The ultrasonic test equipment in use and the two spares (cathode ray l
tube scope referred to in your letter) all had calibration stickers I
affixed indicating that the equipment had been calibrated just prior to beginning the baseline inspection on our reactor vessel, but the "calibra-tion due date" space provided on the calibration sticker had not been filled in.
We were assured by the contractor doing the work that the re-quired calibration frequency for the equipment was three months; there-l-
fore, the equipment was well within the specified calibration interval.
The panel mounted equipnent used to determine water temperature in the vessel had no calibration sticker attached; therefore, the accuracy may I
have been questionable.
It was noted that the contractor was determining water temperature with a hand held dial thermometer and favorably comparing i
readings obtained with the temperature indicated on the panel mounted in-
.(,)
strument as a check. Water temperature determines the angle that the ultrasonic transducer should look at the surface of themetal being ex-amined to obtain the desired beam direction in the metal. Error in er 80041406 TAX P AYING. INVESTOR OWNED MEMBE A MIODLE SOUTH UTILITIES SYSTEM

o Mr. Norman E. Moseley May 30, 1974 temperature would result in an error in determining the depth of an in-dication in the metal.
Investigation revealed that the magnitude of error obtained in locating indications would be in the order of small j
fractions of an inch over a wide range of temperature error and the r
ability to find indication is not a function of temperature. The contrac-tor assured us that both the panel mounted instrument and the hand held instrument were in current calibration.
Volume 2, tab 7 of the baseline inspection report has been revised
~
to include certification that all of the above instrumentation was in current calibration during baseline inspection of unit one reactor vessel.
