Chemical concentration of sodium nitrite in condenser circulating water increased across plant in excess of Environmental Technical Specification limits.

Description of Occurrence:

Samples were taken from the intake and' discharge canals on July 28, 1975, and lab analysis indicates that sodium nitrite concentration in the plant discharge canal was 0.069 mg/l greater than sodium nitrite concentration in the intake canal. ETS limit is 0.005 mg/1.

X Neutralizing. tank was being drained into the discharge fiume at the time of this occurrence.

Analysis od Occurrence:

Samples were taken when the neutralizing tank was being drained into the discharge fiume.

Four circulating water pumps were in operation provid-ing approximately,750,000 gallons per minute dilution flow. The neutralizing tank contains water impurities renaining after regenerating s;

condens, ate demineralizers.

10. Corrective Action:

'A revision to the Environmental Technical Specification concerning j-chen:ical discharges has been submitted to the NRC for approval.
