Dear Sir:
This is an application for NRC approval for the use of a double-bibbed plastic hood by personnel at Rancho Seco Nuclear Power Station for health physics operations.
This request is pursuant to Regulatory Guide 8.15, Part C 6.
There are no similar products (see attachment) which are commercially available that are approved under 30 CFR Part II.
The hood will be used at Rancho Seco Unit I in a carefully controlled respiratory prot'ection program in keeping with good health physics practices.
It will be supplied with an air flow of greater than six cubic feet per minute, but less than fifteen cubic feet per minute, as stated by Mr. L. Musea (see attachment).
For reference please review your inte"nal document TREE-NUREG-1214 concerning the same plastic double-bibbed hood and the attached enclosure, which provides the conditions and the results for which these hoods were tested.
These hoods are clearly superior to some equipment which already has been approved under 30 CFR Part II.
They will provide greater protection than the equipment currently in use, as well as greatly increase worker safety, comfort and productivity. Many national laborateries under DOE contract use similar units for protection against highly coxic atmospheres such as plutonium-239 which further demonstrates their efficiency.
In view of these facts we request an expeditious response on your part so that we may begin use of this superior piece of equipment with a protection factor of 2000. Your response to this request would be appreciated by June 1, 1978.
