DAVIS-BESSE 1 PROPOSED SDtP TEST l

Our review of the 1500 gpa ECCS flow test prooosed by Toledo Edison for Davis-3 esse 1 (Def: Ltr.1/9/76, L. Roa to A. Schwencer) cannot 4

be completed at this ti:ne. The following additional infor=ation is required:

1 1

1.

Suf ficient justification of the sunip design to assure that vortexing would not occur has not been J.iven.

No studios or test data have been offered. The desien of the anti-vortexing device is not supported by test data.

'ihat additional reduction in available head in feet does this device impost on the punps? Availabic infor tation I

('I. 'foodhouse POWER, fav 1956) indicates that less than 3 feet of margin exists to mininum secoex= ended pipe sub-i

ne r3ences. Tolede Edison Company will be required to either provide a full-flow onsite vortex test, or donduct model tests to show that their su::rp configuration is not subject to vortex fornation af ter a LOCA.

l 2.

In response to a question pertaining to TPSii, Toledo :disen go3pany_ raised thz oredicted flood level instfe the contain-cent 6.1 feet over tha predicted laval used for 'IPSU cal-culations in the F':A2.

The reason offered was one of several errors discovered in the FSAR calculations.

Provide a cocipariaen of current calculations of predicted flood height with the previous calculations, clearly cheving the ori.tinal error. State the basis for the 360.000 vallons of water fron the 3'1ST and indicate the quantity of eater I

still remaining in the 3WST at the time of the shift to the recirculation mode.

Provide the esiculations of pressure losses in tha sitet ion lines for each of the four pumps, includina the values of all L/D's, areas. Reynolds Numbers, and friction factors.

Clearly show where cach value was derived, including all fittings in the suction piping. *ihat pressure loss is attributed to the j

sump screens?

s R. C. DeYoung, Jr. N ket FD C R 1 5 IS70 san.Laaing RSB Reading 3.* Provide the manufacturer's test results (data / curves) for the four pu:nps used to determine the required NPSH.

Con-firm that these tests were conducted on the Davis-Besse 1 pumps (i.e., not prototypes).

4 Item 4 in the 1/3/76 letter is not clear. The indication is that some means are provided to prevent excessive fices.

Describe how the required ECCS flow will be established during the preop tests. State the flow criteria and describe its basis.

Indicate the sopropriateness of the flow criteria for both the injection mode and the recircula-tion modo. Discuss the potential for these settings be-coring changed.

Include a discussion of the uncertainties involved in the final established flow (in ter.s of t epn).

5.

With the proposed test setup consisting of a connector in the sump between the two suction lines, it appears that the tiesns exist to achieve the maximum flow rate capability of one train (Dil pump plus spray pu: p).

"*he object of the test would be to confirn the pressure lossas submitted in the 1/3/76 letter. Differences should only be due to entrance losses and tenperature. Discuss means to confirn predicted entrance losses.

Provido all calculations utilized to prdlict the e::pec;'d pressure losses for the cold su=p test.

Describe the critoria which vill be used to statisfy yourself ahat the test irerified the expected post-LOCA con 11tions and dis-cuss the capability to vary flow to obtain more than one point on a plot of NPS1! versus flev.

Dascribe the instrument to be used for t'ie pressure drep measurements, include a diagran of its scale, and specify the instrument uncertAint? involved.
