Facil.y: Day'is Besse 1 - Docket No. 50-346 jj
~11 Responsible Branch Chief:
K. V. Seyfrit ji Description of Item Requiring Resolution:
'l The inspector for Davis Besse 1 has pointed 'out inconsistencies in the FSAR concerning missile protection for the borated water storage tank.
In response to question' 3.8.1-c(a) on page 3.8.1-2 in volume 8, the 3
applicant states; "As the borated water storage tank is not required for the safe shutdown of the station its survival after a tornado is not required. It is noted that a simultaneous LOCA (when the tank's
- 1 contents are needed) and a tornado are not assumed tohncurrent."
1I This is in conflict with the f' illowing:

o 1.
Table 3.3.3-1 on page 3.3.3. b volume 8 lists the high I
pressure injection pumps as one of the systenes required for a safe shutdown in the event of a tomdo.
2.
In response to question 6.3.6, on page 6.3.6-1 in volume 8, the applicant lists the berated water storage tank water at proper boren concentration as an auxiliary for the high pressure injection system.
3.
In response to question 9.0.1, on page 9.0.1-1 in volume 9 l
the applicant states; "The borated water storage tank is the l
only outdoor installation required in order to attain and maintain a safe shutdown."
i It is our understanding that the Division of Reactor Licensing is currently reviewing the necessity of tornado generated missile protec-tien hr borated water storage tanks for all facilities with construction j
permits.
