Dear Mr. Kcppler:

l This letter is submitted in accordance with 10 CTR50.55(e) as a final report regarding the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station Unit I high pressure injection pump, high bearing temperature deficiency which was discussed between our Mr. J. D. Lenardson and your Mr. C. Williams during a site visit on 12/15/76.

Description of the Deficiency During the run-in of the high pressure injection (HPI) pumps, the metal temperature of the pump thrust bearings exceeded the maximum allcwable temperature of 170 F. ,

Corrective Action Taken The pumps were supplied to Toledo Edison by Babcock & Wilcox. Our investigations with the vendor led to the conclusion that a forced lubrication oil system would be required for the HPI pump bearing housing.

A closed-loop, water-cooled system consisting of a reservoir, two pumps, (one AC and one DC), heat exchanger, filter, valves, tubing, temperature and pressure indicators and controls has been designbd and installed on each HPI pump. Normal operation utilizes the AC oil pump and motor.

The forced lubrication oil system is presently undergoing chechout and pre-operational testing. Preliminary operation of the pumps with the redesigned lubrication oil system has indicated the corrective action to be effective. Satisfactory completion of the above mentioned pre-operational testing will result in final acceptance of the design.
