a final report.
In view of this and subsequent conversations between myself and Dr's.
Kinnison and Weimer, the following directives are pmvided in order to expedite the completion of the subject contract. All references herein pertain to the subtasks as defined in your Schedule 189 (February 1980) for FIN No. B2214 (Task No. 300A01433).
2 1.
Task A. Subtasks 1 and 2: On-Site Soil Sample Analysis-These two subtasks have been satisfactorily completed.
2.
Task A. Subtask 3: Analysis of Samples to Verify Cleanup-a.
The analysis of eight sediment samples collected by the National Park Service near the confluence of the Little Colorado and the main stem of the Colorado River are to be completed as soon as possible--(expected completion date of June 3,1980).
b.
This subtask (i.e., analysis of samples taken by HMEID to verify final cleanup) shall be considered as a separate work iten with respect to the final data report as discussed herein.
Since the present funding of this contract is limited to $100K and the completion date of Septenber 30, 1980 cannot be extended, you are authorized to analyze only up to 500 additional samples for IEEID and to report such results by letter provided that:
1)
All analytical work shall be completed prior to September 30,1980 and;
- 11) sufficient funds renain after all of the following t
subtasks have been completed and the final report has been issued.

Graphical displays of the data should only be used to supplement the data sucnary table-- (expected completion date June 30,1980).
4.
Task B. Subtask 2: Identification of Regions Exceeding Cleanup Criteria-- This subtask is to be completed as stated; however, this q
effort should be minimal. Efforts of this task should be gaged by the relatively large error that can be tolerated in the sampling program given the very protective cleanup levels that have been specified and the large area sources that were used by the staff in c

Task B. Subtask 4: Evaluation of Sanpling Scheme--
The evaluation of the initial ?MEID soil sampling scheme (letter from T. Wolff (NMEID) to J. Abiss (UNC); dated September 25, 1979) shall provide any recomendations for completeness, as deemed appropriate based on the statistical analysis of the present data set. Any additional rigorous statistical testing of the data
~
(e.g., a formal time series analysis) is not authorized due to the budget and time constraints-(expected completion date of July 31, 1980)..,.
7.
Task B, Subtask 5: Cleanup Verification Sampling Scheme-In order to fulfill this subtask, you are requested to briefly reviet the proposed sampling srheme as outlined in the attached letter from T. Buhl (tNEID) to H. Miller (NRC); dated April 23 j
1980.. You are requested to provide brief and general coments on what major factors should be considered by fEEID in interpreting data. Again, the nature of the cleanup criteria and the supporting radiological assessment snould be recognized in making your coments, if you have any-(expected completion date of June 27,1980).
8 Task C: Final Sumery Report-This task, as stated in the Schedule 189 and subject to the above directions, is to be completed by September 30, 1980.
