Austin, Texas' 78756 Report JMetzger, IE

Dear Mr. Bailey:

)

'.)

This is in response to your recent request for information on an incident which occurred in the 1950's involving Houston Gama Ray Company.

Our Office of Inspection and Enforcement has been able to retrieve files on this AEC licensee including file materials covering a contamination incident j

in 1955 and disclosed to AEC in 1957 (Enclosure). A rubber band has been

)

placed around the investigation report. A two page sumary of the incident is stapled to the inside cover of the file.

The release limit for contamination at that time was 0.5 mR/hr and the instruments used (Beckman and Tracerlab) were less sensitive than instruments used today.

The finding of these files was fortuitous. They rihould have been transferred to Texas when Texas became an Agreement State and a copy should riot have been l

retained by AEC. They are hereby transferred to Texas.

These files appear to be all the infonnation that we can discover on the 1955 '

incident.

If we do find other information, we will, of course, convey,it to you.

Sincerely, t

4

~

G. Wayne Kerr, Assistant Director for State Agreements Program Office of State Programs 1
