WASHINGTON. D. C. 20555

.....,df g

JUN 121980 The Honorable Dixy Lee Ray-Governor of Washington Olympia, Washington 98504

Dear Governor Ray:

I appreciate your concern about the future role of the Office of S tate Programs expressed in your letter of May 21, 1980, to Chairman Ahearne.

Your praise for the office's past efforts is most welcome.

I want to assure you that your views will be most carefully considered in any reorganization which may affect the Office of S tate Programs.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission remains committed to the idea of preserving close working relations with the States.

I had the opportunity to talk to Betty McClelland and i

discuss with her some of tha thinking that is going on back i

here on ways we can bring the State programs closer to the States.

She indicated that she would pass on to you the j

thrust of our conversation.

If you have the time to spare i

from all of your other troubles out there, I would be happy to go into more details with you.

Sincerely, (5 y,$ 'JJ.h 13.Ul d 3 William J. Dircks Acting Executive Director for Operations 1
