June 18,1980 Dr. G. G. Sherwood, Manager Safety and Licensing General Electric Company 175 Curtner Avenue San Jose, California 95114
Dear Dr. Sherwood:
Subject:
Modification to General Electric Topical Report NEDE-20944-P, "BWR/4 and BWR/5 Fuel Design" By letter dated February 25, 1980, you requested approval of certain minor changes to the approved topical report NEDE-20944-P, "BWR/4 and BWR/5 Fuel Design" and the non-proprietary version NED0-20944 having the same title.
The changes would make the document more representative of the BWR/4 and BWR/5 product line and more representative of current General Electric efforts in the area of fuel design.
The change in the area of fuel design is mostly editorial with the new Section 2.3.1(b), " Fuel Damage Analysis," reflecting the discussion and limits of Section 2.4.1.2, " Safety Evaluation Results," of the approved Licensing Topical Report NEDE-240ll-P, " Generic Reload Fuel Application."
The linear heat generation rate (LHGR) limits for calculated 1% plastic strain are better defined for U0, and U0 -Gd 0, fuel in the revised dis-2 2
cussion and the limits are in agPeement with tMose previously listed in both NEDE-20944-P and NEDE-240ll-P. Since no new fuel design parameters are proposed in the revision, the new Section 2.3.l(b) is found to be acceptable.
We have reviewed the changes proposed by General Electric and we have concluded that they are of minor consequence, and are within the scope of our original review and require no changes to the original staff evaluation. We further conclude that the proposed changes can be in-cluded in the approved version of the report NEDE-20944-P and NED0-20944.
Sincerely, James R. Miller, Chief Standardization & Special Projects Branch Division of Licensing b
