It was requested, in a recent nspection of Peabody Tes ting /X-Ray Engineering's Radioactive Material Licensed activity, that we should have in our possession an approval from NRC's Transportation Branch for use of Shi ping Package Model No. 6717-B (Identification No. USA /6717/B.
Peabody Testing /X-Ray Engineering Company does not have, on file, a record of that approval.
We would like to request information pertaining to this matter.
However, if we have never been given an approval, we would like to apologize for our failure to do so, and would like at this time, to request for that approval.
In addition to using Model 6717-B for air shipments through-out the United States, we also use them for the transporting of exposure devices in our. darkroom truck vehicles (portable field uni ts).
Portable field vehicles are miinly used in the State of California.
We would also like to make a request on the possibility of modifying the packages lid closure.
Modifications would include adding to the lid, a hinge and padlock hasp (see diagram below), which would then eliminate the locking ring and wire seal.

This establishes that the packaging design described herein, when loaded with the authorized radioactive contents, has been certified by the National Competent Authority of the United States, as meeting the regulatory requirements for Type B packaging for l Re radioactive materials as prescribed in IAEA SS49CFR173.393aand173.394(b)(3)oftheUSAgulationsand Regulations for the transport of radioactive materials.

Package Identification - Model No. 6717-B.
II.
Packaging Description - Packaging authorized by this certificate consists of an outer 10-gallon steel drum with an' inner container which is a metal-walled container meeting the requirements of DOT Specification 7A, surrounded by polyurethane filler and a 1-1/2" asbestos liner.
III. Authorized Radioactive Contents - The authorized contents consist of radioactive materials, n.o.s. as not more than 200 curies of iridium-192 as sealed sources which must meet the requirements for special form as set forth in 49 CFR 173.389(g).
IV.
General Conditions -
a.
Each user of this certificate must have in his possession a copy of this certificate.
b.
Each user of this certificate, other than Gamma Industries, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, shall register his identity in writing to the Office of Hazardous

Expiration Date - This certificate, unless renewed, expires on August 31, 1980.

This certificata is issued in accordance with the requirements of the 1AEA and USA Regulations and in response 'to the March 10, 1975, petition by Nuclear Systems, Inc., Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and revised in response to the November 18, 1975, and November 20, 1978, petitions by Gamma Industries, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and in consideration of the associated information provided in U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Certificate USA /6717/B (Appendix A).
