NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION REGULATORY GUIDE Notice of Issuance and Availability The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has issued a revision to a guide in its Regulatory Guide Series.

This series has been developed to describe and make available to the public methods acceptable to the NRC staff of imple-menting specific parts of the Commission's regulations and, in some cases, to. delineate techniques used by the staff in evaluating specific problems or postulated accidents and to provide guidance to applicants concerning certain of the information needed by the staff in its review of applications for permits and licenses.

Revision 2 to Regulatory Guide 5.44, " Perimeter Intrusion Alarm Systems,"

describes six types of perimeter intrusion alarm systems that can be used in

!i nuclear facilities to protect against theft or diversion of strategic special

nuclear material and radiological sabnt. age.

This revision was made to incor-ll l

porate recent changes to the Commission's Physical Protection regulations and 1

reflects public comment and additional staff review.

Appendices A and B, which provide examples of methods for testing these alarm systems, have been I;

added in response to public comment.

Comments and suggestions in connection with (1) items for inclusion in guides currently being developed or (2) improvements in all published guides are encouraged at any time.
