SUBJECT:
REQUEST FOR ACRS COMMENTS ON PROPOSED FIRE PROTECTION RULE: SECY 88 On Wednesday, Decanber 5,1979, the staff made a presentation to the ACRS Fire Protection Subcommittee concerning a proposed rulemaking effort for certain minimum fire protection requirements for nuclear power facilities operating prior to January 1,1979. Although some of the subcommittee msnbers expressed reservations about 1: suing a rule on fire protection, the consensus opinion was that they would not object to the staff sending the i
proposed rule to the Commission with the recon.mdation that it be published l
for public comment.
On April 23, 1980, at affirmation session 80-18 the Commission approved i
with modifications publication of the proposed amendment (SECY 88) in the Federal Register for a 30-day public comment period.
j In addition to the modifications, the "Connission also requested that the view of the ACRS on the proposed rule be obtained during the public comment oeriod and a staff response to those views be provided to the Commission, as appropriate."
Since the Commission has asked for staff response to the ACRS view by June 12, 1980. I would appreciate your giving this your earliest consideration. I have attached for your review 25 copies of the Federal Register notice as revised per the Commission request.
